I was leaving the donation center — a place I’ve been more times than I can count, dropping off what my household no longer needed. I come in one way and leave the other — always left, out of that parking lot. It's just the way I go
But before I’d even pulled out, I was thinking about my dad. I wanted to call him, catch up on his day. And something in me — not a plan, not a reason — said go right instead.
I didn’t have the map. I wasn’t following anything I could point to. I just went.
The road on the other side of that turn was one I’d never seen. Two lanes, quiet, lined with homes and yards I didn’t know existed inside a city I’ve lived in for years. People walking their dogs. No hurry anywhere. It felt like a country road that had been there the whole time, waiting for someone to stop taking the usual way.
I talked to my dad the whole way. No rushing. No checking a map to see how much longer. Just the road, and his voice, and whatever was next.
When I came to the next stop, I knew exactly where I was. The turn from there took me right to the market — not out of my way, not lost, not behind. Exactly on course. My call with my dad ended just before I arrived. There was a shady spot waiting for me in the parking lot on a hundred-degree day. The shopping was simple. The way home was simple. Everything, somehow, was in flow.
I hadn’t asked anything outside myself for directions. I’d just trusted the next turn.
That one-second decision — go right instead of left, this time, right now — is the same decision available in every part of a life. Not a plan. Not certainty about where it leads. Just a willingness to notice the pull and follow it, the way I did before I even left the parking lot.
And here’s what matters most: following it didn’t take me off course. It brought me to the market exactly on time, by a road I’d never trusted before. That’s what trusting the heart actually does. It doesn’t derail you. It finds you a better way to arrive exactly where you were already headed.
I know this is where I've gotten off track before — in relationships, in the way I've shown up for family, in the businesses I've built. Not because I was reckless. Because I stopped trusting the one-second pull of my own heart, and started believing someone else must have the better answer. I’ve watched it happen in business more times than I can count — someone reaches for a virtual assistant, or lately, for AI, to take something off their plate before they’ve ever learned to do it well themselves, and it never lightens the load. It multiplies the chaos. You can’t hand someone the keys to a road you’ve never driven yourself. In-source first — learn it, live it, feel it — and then, if you bring someone in, it’s partnership instead of rescue. You’re still the one who knows the way.
Underneath all of it is a simpler truth: we override what’s best for us, again and again, chasing a promise of certainty from somewhere outside ourselves. But certainty was never really available anywhere. What is available is a path built from your own knowing, instead of someone else's map, arriving at the same tired question: why didn't this work the way I thought it would. Once you know your own navigation — the wisdom in your heart, talking with your mind — you’re no longer handing over the wheel. You’re choosing, piece by piece, what belongs on your road. That’s different than starting with someone else’s map and hoping it fits, with no compass of your own to check it against.
The mind wants the why, the how, the who, the what — a full accounting before it will move. But there’s another way to travel, and it belongs to the heart. When we let the heart lead — following only what feels true right now, without knowing what’s ahead — the mind is freed instead of burdened. It becomes creative instead of gripping the wheel.
Think of the pause between heartbeats. That space is already there, naturally — the same kind of space that lets everything flow, the heart keeping everything running without the mind ever needing to understand how. It carries its own quiet intelligence. And when the mind lets that intelligence go first, everything reveals itself in its own time.
That’s what the detour was. Not a departure from who I am — an expression of it. I didn’t decide to trust myself that day. I just followed the next turn, the way the heart keeps beating without asking permission. Small. Ordinary. No peak experience, no dramatic moment — just an afternoon with the map turned off, and everything arriving exactly where it needed to.
Where in your life are you reaching for someone else’s map, before you’ve trusted your own next turn?
You don’t have to answer that today. Just notice it, the way I noticed mine before I’d even left the parking lot. Let it sit. Whatever wants to reveal itself will, in its own time. And you’ll know it belongs to you, because it’s coming from your own heart — becoming part of your journey, your own road, not one you borrowed from someone else.
The wisdom is within. It always has been. Give yourself the space for the one-second decisions your heart already knows.
We are the answer we keep looking for.
